Why Fluency in English is Important for International Students?
Writing as an International Student is one of the most gratifying and rewarding endeavors for college students today. With globalization, mass immigration, and the constant changing trends in business and politics, the expectations of students from other countries have grown significantly. A strong ability to speak, read, and write in multiple languages is required for successful entry into most professional fields of employment. This is particularly true of the United States, where English as a Second Language (ESL) certification is becoming more necessary for entry-level positions and advanced academic programs. But while having spoken and written in a variety of languages makes international student writing interesting and challenging, it also presents certain unique challenges. Unlike students living in the United States or other Western countries, those from abroad are exposed to a different culture. Most speak a language other than English, which is particularly true of those from Asia and South America. There are varying opinions on how much this affects their academic performance--some argue that language learning is difficult because students cannot effectively communicate with each other on many topics. Others argue that students form unique connections with their professors and other students, thus enhancing their chances of performing well academically. These arguments miss an important part of the picture, however. Students from abroad do not necessarily come from a country with English as its national language. Many do not even speak English! If they do, they may not think of English as their national language. This means that, while they come from a world characterized by widespread cultural identity formation, they are not fully familiar with how to express that identity in formal academic settings here in the United States or in academic institutions in their home country. The most promising option for those who want an ESL writing assignment and don't live in the United States or in a majority English speaking country is English as Second Language (ESL). Established in 2021, ESL programs seek to integrate students who wish to study the English language into the academic community and society in general. There are numerous reasons why people from non-English speaking countries choose to study English, but one of the largest motivations is to experience the benefits of cultural exchange while gaining academic respect in the process. The United Kingdom and Australia are some of the most popular locations for ESL programs. In the United States, an increasing number of universities are starting to offer degree courses that are centered around the English language. Because of these trends and the benefits of living and working in a country where English is spoken, there are many nontraditional methods of teaching and studying the English language that serve to supplement or replace the traditional classroom norms. Teaching and learning English as a Second Language (ESL) helps those who may not be native speakers of the language to interact with and learn from native speakers of the language. For students living in non-English speaking nations, a teacher who is both familiar with the language and capable of communicating with it on a daily basis serves as an invaluable resource. It is no surprise then that many teachers of ESL find employment at both the college and university levels and in private school settings. The ability to communicate in a way that feels natural is one of the biggest draws to the field of American English. When English is used as second language students tend to feel comfortable expressing themselves academically, socially, and emotionally. Learning English allows students to overcome many of the difficulties that they may experience when first entering the United States. As a nation, the United States has a long tradition of welcoming immigrants and abhors discrimination against them. A good number of students studying abroad wish to join this proud culture and gain fluency in the English language so that they can one day apply for a U.S. visa and become a fully integrated part of the American population. Teaching abroad provides many students with the experience and training they need to prepare for their immigration future. When selecting a program for student fluency in English (ESOL), it is important to find an institution that offers flexible class scheduling, a high quality curriculum, and access to a wide variety of course offerings. It is also important to ensure that your instructor(s) have strong credentials and are trained in the basics of language learning. If you feel you've found a great institution, make sure to visit the facilities on a regular basis. If a country offers individual courses, be sure to select a class that will give students the experience of being together in a group. These factors are all important in preparing students to enter the workplace with fluency in English language. |
